Kris Kristofferson is a singer-songwriter and actor from the United States. He left a promising military career to pursue his dream of becoming a songwriter. ‘Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,’ ‘Once More with Feeling,’ ‘For the Good Times,’ ‘Help Me Make It Through the Night,’ and ‘Me and Bobby McGee’ are among his best-known songs. ‘Kristofferson,’ his debut album, was a commercial failure. His second album, ‘The Silver Tongued Devil and I,’ was a huge success. ‘Why Me,’ from his fourth album ‘Jesus Was a Capricorn,’ was a huge hit.

Childhood & Early Life

Kristoffer Kristofferson was born on June 22, 1936, in Brownsville, Texas, USA, to Lars Henry Kristofferson and Mary Ann. His father was an Air Force Major General who retired from the military and joined the Saudi Arabian company Aramco.’

He spent most of his early childhood in Brownsville, Texas. He graduated from ‘San Mateo High School,’ California in 1954. He joined ‘Pomona College,’ Claremont, where he won a short story contest conducted by ‘Atlantic Monthly magazine.

A brilliant sportsman and scholar, he completed B.An in Literature. Having received ‘Rhodes Scholarship’ he joined Oxford University’s ‘Merton College’ and obtained a B. Phil in English literature in 1960.

Career

During the early 1960s, Kristofferson joined the army and was stationed in West Germany. In 1965, while assigned as an English instructor at West Point, he decided to resign from the Army in order to pursue songwriting seriously.

He relocated to Nashville and struggled to make ends meet. With ‘Vietnam Blues,’ he achieved success as a songwriter for singer Dave Dudley. In 1966, the song reached the “Top 20.”

His songs were recorded by Ray Stevens (‘Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,’ Jerry Lee Lewis (‘Once More with Feeling,’ Ray Price (‘For the Good Times,’ and Sammi Smith (Help Me Make It Through the Night) in the 1970s.

Kris Kristofferson’s song ‘Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,’ written for Ray Stevens, became a hit for Major Works. However, Johnny Cash’s version of the song, released in 1970, topped the ‘US Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and won numerous awards.

Kris co-wrote ‘Me and Bobby McGee,’ which was a hit for Roger Miller and Johnny Cash. However, Janis Joplin’s version of the song is ranked 148th on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “500 Greatest Songs.”
